SIMPLE MODEgravel tonnage calculator

Gravel Tonnage Calculator

Work out how many tons of gravel a pile or delivery area holds. Measure the pile’s height and base circumference, or the pad’s length, width and depth; the calculator converts to tonnes or short tons at a typical loose density of 1.6 t/m³.

Want exact numbers, not estimates? Tape formulas assume an ideal cone or box — real piles settle, spill and merge. A drone scan (DSM/GeoTIFF from any photogrammetry app) captures the true surface: the PileReport DSM tool computes true per-pile volumes in your browser. Free, nothing uploaded.

Estimate from idealized geometry and typical loose bulk densities. Not a certified survey. Not for trade measurement. Always verify densities with site measurements.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I convert gravel volume to tons?

Multiply volume by density. Loose dry gravel runs about 1.6 t/m³ — roughly 1.2 tonnes (1.3 short tons) per cubic yard. The calculator applies this in both unit systems and shows the density it used.

Cone or box — which shape should I pick?

Conveyor-fed stockpiles form roughly conical piles: use height plus a base circumference walked out with a tape. Windrows and material stacked against a wall are closer to the rectangular shape.
